BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The #WHATSMYNAME Foundation was established in honor of Samantha “Sami” Josephson, a vibrant 21-year-old college student whose life was tragically cut short in March 2019. Samantha entered a car she mistook for her rideshare in Columbia, South Carolina, and was kidnapped and murdered. Her death shocked the nation and sparked an urgent call to improve rideshare safety awareness.
In response to this unimaginable loss, Samantha’s parents founded the #WHATSMYNAME Foundation to ensure that no other family would have to endure a similar tragedy. The Foundation’s name comes from the simple but powerful question “What’s my name?”—a question rideshare users are encouraged to ask drivers to confirm their identity before entering a vehicle.
The mission of the #WHATSMYNAME Foundation is to educate people, particularly students and young adults, about rideshare safety. Through partnerships with schools, universities, airports, businesses, and public officials, the Foundation raises awareness, advocates for safety policies, and distributes signage and resources nationwide.
Samantha’s legacy lives on through this movement—a reminder to always stop and ask, “What’s my name?” before getting into any vehicle. A moment of pause could mean the difference between life and tragedy.
